Massachusetts will be the second state to launch legalized sports betting in 2023, only behind Ohio. Will betting go live in time for Patriots fans to be able to bet on Super Bowl 57? The short answer: kind of.

Let’s look at the timeline for Massachusetts sports betting and in what capacity Patriots fans will be able to bet on the big game.

When Will Massachusetts Launch Sports Betting?

While Ohio will be launching all phases of sports betting (retail, online, and betting kiosks) at the same time on New Year’s Day, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission has decided in favor of a split rollout.

Massachusetts sports betting is expected to launch in time for the Super Bowl, but wagers will only be accepted in person at physical brick-and-mortar locations. Retail betting is expected to be available toward the end of January with mobile betting apps following in March.

Therefore, New England Patriots fans will be able to bet on the Super Bowl but their options in Massachusetts will be limited.

Where Can Patriots Fans Bet on the Super Bowl in Massachusetts?

The Massachusetts Sports Wagering Act allows for physical retail sportsbooks at five locations: three casinos and two simulcast and horse racetracks. The two simulcast tracks have already let the MGC know they won’t be ready for the January launch.

For Patriots fans, this means betting on Super Bowl 57 in Massachusetts will have to occur at one of the three following casinos.

Encore Boston Harbor

Address: 1 Broadway, Everett, MA 02149

Encore Boston Harbor was the first casino to be approved for its retail sportsbook which will be operated by WynnBET. This retail partnership will also give the WynnBET mobile app access to Massachusetts once online betting launches in March.

Located just three miles from TD Garden and five miles from Fenway Park, the WynnBET Sportsbook at Encore Boston Harbor will surely be a popular spot for Massachusetts sports fans to place their wagers on Super Bowl 57.

MGM Springfield

Address: One MGM Way, Springfield, MA 01103

As one of the leading brands in gambling and entertainment, MGM Springfield will unsurprisingly feature a BetMGM-branded retail sportsbook. Located about an hour west of Worcester, MGM Springfield offers hundreds of slots and table games.

If you’re a traveler, MGM has a great rewards program and you can earn points both at physical MGM locations as well as through the BetMGM app.

Plainridge Park Casino

Address: 301 Washington St, Plainville, MA 02762

Plainridge Park Casino is owned and operated by Penn Entertainment, which by February 2023, will own 100% of Barstool. Because of this close relationship between PE, Barstool, and thus David Portnoy, the MGC decided to put the retail sportsbook approval for Plainridge on hold. Portnoy has been under heavy scrutiny recently following a story by the New York Times.

The locations of Massachusetts’ three casinos leave those in the northern part of the state with limited options. Their best bet will be to cross into New Hampshire or New York, where both retail and online sports betting are permitted.

Patriots Super Bowl 57 Odds

Here are the New England Patriots Super Bowl 57 odds as of Week 14 from the four most popular online sportsbooks.

  • FanDuel: +12000
  • DraftKings: +13000
  • BetMGM: +15000
  • Caesars: +15000

The Patriots’ 2022-2023 season has been disappointing compared to their previous year, when they finished 10-7 and second in the AFC East. Mac Jones hasn’t taken the step forward many projected him to, and the offense as a whole has struggled under the leadership of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

Heading into Week 14, New England is on the outside of the playoffs looking in as one of several AFC bubble teams. With a strong Miami Dolphins team and a surprising New York Jets team, there is little room for error the rest of the way for the Patriots if they want to make a postseason appearance.

Which Online Sportsbook Apps are Expected to Come to Massachusetts?

Although mobile wagering won’t be available in time for Super Bowl 57, there is a good chance it will be up and running for another massive sports betting event – March Madness.

These are some of the online sportsbooks Bay State bettors can expect to be available to them when the time comes:

  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • Caesars
  • BetMGM
  • BetRivers
  • Betfred
  • bet365
  • WynnBET
  • PointsBet
  • Barstool Sportsbook

At full maturity, there will be 15 Massachusetts online sportsbooks. Eight of these will be tied to the five retail locations while the other seven won’t have any such associations. The three casinos are permitted to partner with two online operators, leaving one partnership each for Suffolk Downs and Raynham Park.
