When you plan a unique birthday celebration for somebody special, the point is that you want to show how thankful you are for that person being born, and especially that the person is still going strong a number of years later.
However, strictly speaking, there’s nothing special about the exact date on which somebody was born. In the Gregorian calendar, we say that a day that falls exactly 365 ¼ days after another day is the same day, but this is no more than a convention.
In other cultures, around seven major types of calendars are used around the world for keeping track of special days. If you happened to be using a different calendar, the day on which you were born wouldn’t reoccur on the same day every year.
Birthday Celebrations for Kids
Nonetheless, whatever date you choose to have them on, birthday celebrations are important.
Creating a once-in-a-lifetime birthday celebration for kids is easy. Young children have only had a handful of birthdays in their lives, so each one is going to be unique. All you need is plenty of sugary eats, plenty of bright colors, and plenty of other kiddies getting excited and making a big noise. However, one of our favorite unique children’s birthday ideas is the Birthday Scavenger Hunt.
Part of the fun of receiving a gift is the fact that it’s a big surprise. We wrap our gifts in layers of paper to prolong the excitement of opening them. To make the surprise even more extreme, think about not only wrapping the gifts but also hiding them! If your child is old enough, you could create a treasure map or write cryptic clues to the secret gift locations.
Birthday Celebrations for Adults
Designing special birthday celebrations for adults can be a bit more tricky. By the time you’re past the age of 25 or so, you’ve had more than enough birthdays to start getting blasé about the whole deal.
Rather than getting excited weeks in advance, we sometimes even forget our own birthdays. Moreover, now that you’re all grown up and earning your own living, chances are that, whenever you need something, you’ll go out and buy it for yourself.
The solution is, don’t focus on things – focus on experiences! To celebrate somebody you care about, think about what makes that person special. What do you know about that person that other people might not know will help you create the perfect birthday celebration?
For an outdoors enthusiast, it could be going on a memorable trip or doing a fun activity. For a busy working mom, it might be blissful just to spend a night or two at a luxury getaway without any chores or responsibilities.
Bottom Line
Our favorite idea for making someone’s birthday really special is writing a birthday letter. You can write it on a birthday card, or, if you need more space, just use plain paper. If you go to the trouble of explaining how much the person means to you and why, we can guarantee that person will hang onto that letter, and get pleasure out of reading it for many years to come.
