Did the latest strong storm hit your home? The worst dread of a homeowner is having a storm come through and harm their Roof.

Roof damage is not something you’re likely to consider or notice as you approach your home. But remember that those storms could have seriously damaged your Roof from hail or strong winds.

Why Do Storms Damage Roofs?

Wind, water, hail, and debris are the four primary suspects in storm damage to your roof.

1. Water Damage

There are a few ways that heavy rain can gather and damage property after the storm has passed. First, if your roof lacks enough drainage or has previously developed weak spots, a strong downpour will lie on top, causing sunken areas or very easy leakage through broken shingles.

Additionally, if your gutters are blocked, rainwater won’t be able to drain from the roof properly; instead, it will collect there, where it may then seep into the roof’s weak places.

2. Damage From Debris

Sticks and branches can break off and blow onto your roof during powerful thunderstorms, among other types of debris. A tree or branch could fall on your top and cause severe damage if you’re particularly unlucky.

However, even tiny branches, twigs, and other garbage that flies around and lands on your roof might harm it.

How To Identify Storm Damage To A Roof

You might expect to experience storm damage roof repairs after a significant storm but do you know how to identify it?

Storm damage can be so minor that you may not even notice the impacts of a water leak or other damage for weeks or months.

This makes it even more important to know how to catch it as soon as possible. When searching for storm damage, keep the following in mind:

1. Missing or Damaged Shingles

Go outside and inspect your roof once the storm has passed. Can you see any shingles that are missing? Are any shingle roofs that have warped or broken? If it is safe to do so, climb a ladder for a closer look at this damage, which should be somewhat visible.

You should get that covered as soon as possible if you do discover that you have missing or seriously damaged shingles.

2. Discoloration or Dented Shingles

If there was hail, you should check for hail damage. Although a missing or damaged shingle is a possible sign of hail damage, your shingle is more likely to have dents or round patches of discoloration.

You can detect these at a closer look, although the dents will be somewhat noticeable, and the discoloration may be just as tricky to spot.

However, when hail strikes your shingle, it effectively breaks through the top layer of granules, revealing the dark asphalt layer below. The dent or missing granules in the shingle will show through the deeper hue.

Conclusion

These following actions must be taken immediately following a storm that was powerful enough to harm your roof and the rest of your property.
