It’s been more than a year since Netflix’s Squid Game exploded onto our screens. When it came out in September 2021, it was a huge hit with people all over the world.
In September 2022, it was also a huge hit with people who vote for awards. The Korean series cemented its place in TV history when it won six Emmy Awards, including Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Lee Jung-jae and Directing for a Drama Series for Hwang Dong-hyuk.
It was the first non-English show to win those awards. We want more Squid Game like we’ve only had a hard-boiled egg and a bottle of soda, so we have to wonder when Season 2 will come out. We’ll try to answer this and other questions in the next section.
Squid Game Latest Updates
We’ll take any news about Squid Game at this point, even if it isn’t about Season 2. In September 2022, Director Hwang Dong-hyuk gave fans a special treat: a clip from Season 1 that had never been seen before.
Netflix calls the video “the shocking reveal of Front Man.” In it, a man carries a bag of goldfish before showing his face. What’s the meaning of the goldfish? I’m not sure. Maybe Season 2 will tell us.
Do you know that carnival game where you throw ping-pong balls into bowls of goldfish? Maybe one of the games in Season 2 will be like that, but with sharks instead of goldfish and other people instead of ping-pong balls.
Squid Game Season 2 Story and Renewal
It took a long time for Squid Game to be officially picked up for a second season. The news came in June 2022, nine months after the first season started.
Along with the show’s renewal for a second season, Netflix tweeted a letter from the show’s creator, Dong-hyuk, in which he promises “a whole new round” of games and gives some details about Season 2, like who we can expect to see again. It turns out that the huge scary doll has a “boyfriend” named Cheol-su.
You can bet that Dong-hyuk has already made up a whole new plot in his head. “I have a set outline,” he told E! News. “I have a treatment of a whole Season 2 episode with new games and new characters. I like it. I think it’s good. It’s better than what I expected.”
When Will Season 2 of Squid Game Come Out?
As of Oct. 28, there is no date set for Season 2, but Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair that it could come out by the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024. You can stream Season 1 of Squid Game on Netflix.
Squid Game Season 2 Cast
There were a lot (and we mean A LOT) of deaths in Season 1, so Season 2 will have a very small cast. That means that in the future, there will have to be a lot of new characters.
In the above tweet, Dong-hyuk told us that the main character, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), also known as “Player 456,” and the person in charge of the game, “The Front Man,” will be back (Lee Byung-hun). Plus, “The man in the suit with ddakji might be back.” Don’t play with him, no matter what you do!
Even though Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo), Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo), and fan favorite Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) were important characters in Season 1, it seems unlikely that they will show up in Season 2 given what happened to them in Season 1.
